Our next general meeting is coming up at Sybergs on Dorsett. This location is anticipated to be locked in for the remainder of the ASPE year.

The St. Louis ASPE chapter is also hosting our ASPE Region 5 presidents meeting. If you’re unfamiliar this is when the ASPE presidents and vice presidents of the Region 5 chapters gather to discuss business. We’re looking for sponsors to help us cover costs of this meeting. Please reach out to your respective board member if you have any interest.

We also put together a welcome package for our visiting ASPE members. If you have product items your team is open to donating please reach out to your respective ASPE board member.

TECHNICAL REPORT

April 2026

Hey everyone!

Presenter: Ken Rutherford
Position: Sr. ASME Product Engineer EP Amtrol
Company: Amtrol

Presenter Bio:

Mr. Rutherford is an ASHRAE member engineer with 37 years commercial HVAC product experience. For 6 years Mr. Rutherford was a part-time educator with the Indiana Vocational Technical College, expanding the knowledge & skills of Indiana contractors. Mr. Rutherford started his career with Amtrol in 2007 as a commercial product sales engineer. Currently Mr. Rutherford is the Sr. Commercial Product Analyst for Amtrol, providing commercial hydronic product support & continued education for commercial engineers both nationally & internationally. Mr. Rutherford also hosts state accredited contractor & inspector courses on tanks for hydronic applications as well as local ASPE chapter speaker events nationally. In 2021 Mr. Rutherford provided an expansion tank class at the ASPE Tech Symposium.

Topic: Thermal & Hydronic Tanks for Water Applications

The purpose of this presentation is to provide the course attendee with information & selection tools necessary to design thermal expansion conditions in domestic hot water applications, providing solutions to those conditions in the form of expansion tank technology. The course material will be presented in the following topic stages. 

  • Thermal & Hydronic Expansion

Thermal & hydronic expansion is defined & exampled with typical HVAC & domestic water applications.

  • Tank Solutions to Expansion Conditions

Expansion tank solutions are offered as a device to control thermal 

expansion. Tank functions are defined. 

  • Potable Water Tank Applications

Domestic hot and booter water applications with tanks are defined. Sizing & selection instructions and examples are provided for expansion and booster pump tanks.

  • Tank Placement & Proper Installation Procedures

Tank location and installation recommendations that lead to system efficient and consistent operation as well as promoting a healthy potable water condition.

Last Month's General Meeting Minutes

MARCH GENERAL MEETING

March 3, 2026

President Mitch Spillman welcomed everyone to the 7th meeting of the 2025-2026 ASPE year.  Spring has sprung and the warm weather is here!

There was one new member, Brittney Hunnell, who is with Victaulic.

He then asked for self-introductions.  As the introductions were going on, he had people start going through the food line.

President’s Report

Mitch Spillman had the following to report – 

  • Happy Women in Construction week – we are fortunate to have so many intelligent, talented, and strong women in the construction industry

  • ASSE is having their meeting in St. Louis April 14th-15th

  • 12 March Birthdays

  • 14 March membership anniversaries

  • As a reminder, please make sure you sign-in and print your name legible, marking if you need a CEU, PEU or PDH; if you are visitor or non-member, please list your email address; for St. Louis County credit, include your license number

  • The minutes are no longer read at the meetings to allow additional time for our speakers; they are listed on the website and in the newsletter before the meetings

MOTION:  To approve the December General Meeting Minutes. APPROVED.

Vice-President Legislative’s Report

Jack Fischer had the following to report – 

  • He was able to attend the last PCRC meeting –

    • MSD is getting what they want for residential requirements – exterior cleanouts on all laterals to the building

Vice-President Membership’s Report

JJ Nagel could not attend the meeting.

Mitch did note that currently the Chapter has 139 members.

Treasurer’s Report

David Notheis had the following to report – 

  • Chapter is financially sound

  • The Sponsorship Package is out and you should have seen it

    • He will be contacting those who had ads on the website to see about participating

    • We need participation, so that we can do the things we want and have a viable Chapter

Newsletter Editor’s Report 

Crystal Kramer could not attend the meeting.

Mitch advised that the newsletter is out.

Website Editor’s Report

Alex Howard had the following to report – 

  • Advised that he has dedicated a section for CEU opportunities, so if you know of any, keep him informed.

Education Chairman’s Report

Jon Mueller was not able to attend the meeting.

Mitch did advise the following –

  • ASPE’s virtual Learning Day is March 18th – 4 different programs available

  • IAPMO has training opportunities as well, listed on their website

Affiliate Liaison’s Report

Angie Mendica had the following to report –

  • Golf outing is scheduled for July 28th at Tapawing

ASPE Young Professionals (AYP) Report –

Tyler Rhoads could not attend the meeting.

Mitch did advise that he is looking into something at the “Flight Club”.

Women of ASPE’s (WOA) Report 

Logan Carter advised that she would love to do something, but we need sponsors.

Social Media Report

Elizabeth Womack could not attend the meeting.

Vice-President Technical’s Report

Crystal Kramer could not attend the meeting.

Mitch introduced today’s speaker, Patrick Mullowney with Wilkins by Zurn/Elkay.  His talk today is on “Backflow Prevention & Pressure Reduction Methods”.

After his presentation, Mitch gave him one of our Arch Awards.

JACKPOT WINNER: Drawing was for $30.  Names drawn were Aaron Backes, Paul Hellickson and James Mackey – none were present.  Next month’s drawing will be for $40.
